VISION

The provincial vision for Surigao Del Norte is aimed at poverty alleviation and building the capacity of poor communities in Siargao Group of Islands and the Coastal communities along the Hinatuan Passage and the municipalities traversing the Lake Mainit Ecosystem in pursuit of the province’s vision of:

In the year 2008, Surigao del Norte is a province with prosperous and sustainable economy anchored on globally competitive and ecologically sound mining, agri-fishery and tourism, with God-centered and empowered citizenry working as one.

The main development concerns of this vision are:

a. Widespread poverty and inequity especially in rural areas due to inequality in land distribution/ownership and the biased implementation of programs and projects;

b. High unemployment and underemployment due to lack of job opportunities;

 

c. Low socio-economic activities due to inadequate infrastructure facilities and utilities;

d. Environmental degradation due to watershed destruction by illegal loggers, miners, blighted urban area resulting from congestion and slum dwelling which affect sewerage and proper waste disposal/treatment facilities.

GOALS AND OBJECTIVES

a. Promote the general well-being of the people through accelerated and sustained socio-economic growth and improved access to basic services.

b. Hasten economic growth with optimum and sustainable utilization of resources, through improved infra facilities and utilities and appropriate climate of participation of all sectors in development.

It seeks to do this through the Provincial Main Strategies

a. Establishment of small, medium and large scale mining and processing industries, agri-fishery production and processing industries and promotion of livelihood projects and tourism development;

b. Preservation and rehabilitation of critical eco-system, habitats and coastal resources;

c. Upgrading and realignment of education/skills training programs aimed at meeting industrial demands, provision of socialized/low cost housing facilities and improved delivery of basic health services;

d. Improvement of existing transportation support system specially road network, power, water supply and telecommunication systems.
